Scientific name: Amomum maximum Roxb.

Synonym: Cardamomum maximum (Roxb.) Kuntze

Bengali/Vernacular name: Barotera.

Description of the plant: A tall rhizomatous herb. Leaf oblong or long elliptic, base attenuate, apex caudate. The lovely white flowers appear in dense clusters from compact inflorescences at ground level. Labellum white, yellow on each side of midvein, red striate at base, ovate, apex slightly revolute, entire. Capsule purple-green, ovoid.

Plant parts used: Rhizome.

Ethnomedicinal uses: An extract is made with the rhizome of the plant is applied on affected part of the body to treat abscesses.

A paste is made with the rhizome of the plant is applied on the affected part of the body once a day for three days to treat mumps.

Distribution: The species is found in Bandarban district.
